Fendall Project

This was one of LifeSTYLED's most  full-scale projects. This house had been ABANDONED for several years, the roof had failed and the house was full of mold and mildew.  In many of the rooms the ceilings had caved in and the bathroom was destroyed.

A wall was removed to create a large country kitchen out of the Kitchen/DR that had existed previously.  Neither room was large enough for modern needs.

All new systems were installed to include HVAC, plumbing, and electric.  The roof was torn off and rebuilt with new joists to replace those that had rotted.  The vinyl siding was removed to reveal beautiful cypress siding with dentil cornice molding on the facade.  Windows were fixed and retained for architectural originality.

The second floor ceiling was raised to create a more usable space and floors throughout were fixed and replaced.  Original oak was used on kitchen floor and original hex tile in bathroom.  A rear patio was added and extensive landscaping done.   The house was fully painted inside and out.

  • Before and After Exterior

    • Before: Day of purchase

House on "Day 1" of renovation.  Note the bad vinyl siding, overgrown plantings and rotted roof.

    • Facade Final

House  Fully Renovated.  Note new roof, original clapboard siding and dentil detail uncovered.

Making the decision to bring another house "back to original" paid off again as can be seen in this picture set.  The house turned out to be a lovely, warm, and inviting home.

  • Rear Elevation

    • Rear Elevation Before

This "first day" picture shows the caving in roof and general state of the property as purchased.

    • Rear of House After

      Rear of Home: After
considerable landscaping was done .  A patio was added to make the rear yard more usable.  An Amish storage shed was also added.

The proof is in the pictures.  From an abandoned wreck to a lovely place to enjoy the back yard with just three months to renovate.  Miracles do happen!

  • Kitchen Remodel

    • Tiny kitchen barely fit a sink, stove and refrigerator

Typical kitchen of it's time.  Tiny and with no storage or space for appliances. This would never be suitable for modern living.

    • Kitchen: After

Custom cabinets (42 inches), appliances, new wood floor, tin backsplash and counters make this a "Cape Cod" kitchen to be reckoned with!

The combination of kitchen and dining room proved to be a wise decision making this house highly livable where it would not have been otherwise. A great outcome.

  • Kitchen After

    • View of kitchen dining area carved out of small previous dining room to make a functional country kitchen

    • A pot rack was fashioned out of old window bars and became quite a conversation piece, looking out to vestibule and rear yard.

    • Bathrrom Before

A complete gut of the bathroom was completed to include rotting studs in the walls and ceiling due to years of water damage.

    • Bathroom After

Period tile and new fixtures make the bathroom fall in line with the rest of the house.

Having only one bathroom, it was necessary to focus on bringing this one back from the brink of disaster.  The results are smashing!

  • Upstairs Den/Office

    • Upstairs Den

This picture shows the original state of the upstairs den with the low ceilings still in place.

    • Same window, different feeling, note the extra space carved out with the new celing height!

The second story was opened up by lifting the ceiling to maximize living space.  The floors were refinished and rooms painted.  The result was a third bedroom off the Den/Office that was a private retreat for kids or guests.

    • Den/Study After

Finished product shows new look of upstairs.

Color Coordinated

As with our Georgia and Carter Projects, color played an important part of the final look of this house.  We chose a green and tan color story for this house.

Two shades of tan were used for the body of the house as well as the trim.  Two shades of green were used on the windows with the door matching the interior sash of the windows.

Four subtle colors added a lot of depth to this house as a final product.

Did you know?

Most paint stores are happy to give you a colorwheel to take home to aid in your color selection.

When choosing color it is best to stick with neutral colors and not waste money on custom paint or wallpaper unless you plan on staying in the home for a very long time.
